The victory at Paris Saint-Germain serves as a perfect example of how the whole squad are needed if Liverpool are to achieve success this season, Virgil van Dijk believes.

Harvey Elliott scored 46 seconds after his introduction to the first leg of the Champions League last-16 tie on Wednesday, finishing clinically in the 87th minute after being teed up by fellow substitute Darwin Nunez.

Van Dijk was delighted with the mentality displayed by every Red during a testing night at the home of the Ligue 1 champions.

In his column in the matchday programme for Saturday's Premier League meeting with Southampton, the captain writes: "It is never easy to play away from home in the Champions League, especially against a side with as much quality and intensity as PSG has.

"We knew even before a ball was kicked that there would be times in the game where we would have to suffer, and that we would have to show character, resilience and togetherness.

"We showed all of those things, and of course it helps when you have, in my opinion, the best goalkeeper in the world in your team. Alisson Becker has saved us many times in the past and his performance in Paris was another special one to add to his collection, for sure.

"I must stress, however, that it is always a team effort whenever we win games. And yet again, you saw on Wednesday night that players were able to come off the bench and make a positive impact for us.

"Harvey Elliott and Darwin Nunez combined for the winning goal, but don't overlook the contributions of Wataru Endo and Curtis Jones either. They showed exactly the right attitude coming into a tough game, and helped secure the advantage for us.

"Of course, the job still needs to be finished at Anfield next week. It's only half-time and there is a lot of work still to be done. We expect a really tough test in the second leg, but before that we have the visit of Southampton to what I hope will be an extremely noisy and vibrant Anfield."

Van Dijk continues: "Make no mistake, [Saturday] is a very important game. I know some people outside of Liverpool will look at the Premier League table and think this could be a straightforward afternoon for us, but I can assure you that none of us players will feel that way.

"There is no such thing as an easy game in the Premier League and Southampton will get our full respect and attention, just like every team we play against does.

"We have played against them twice already this season, once in the league and once in the Carabao Cup, and both were tough, close games in which we only narrowly secured the victory. We had to dig deep on both occasions and we are ready for another big fight.

"So we know that we will need to be ready to fight and to run and to play from the very first whistle until the last. We accept the challenge, and hopefully we can give you lots to shout about at the end of another memorable week."
