Liverpool FC Women interim head coach Amber Whiteley has made a new appointment to her staff with Niamh Russell joining as assistant coach on an interim basis.

Russell steps up from her former role as assistant coach with LFC Women's Pro Game Academy and will continue to have some responsibilities with the club's U21s.

The Glasgow native joined the Reds two years ago, moving south to help oversee the development of the next generation of young players at the AXA Melwood Training Centre.

Russell told Liverpoolfc.com: "I moved down from Glasgow for the position as U21s assistant coach here at Liverpool.

"I've been here for the past two years working within the academy programme, seeing the great progress there and where the staff have been brilliant to me.

"In Scotland, I was with Rangers, working in their girls' academy as U16s head coach and U19s assistant, which was great. I was also working within the Scottish FA with some involvement in the youth national team set-up."

The 27-year-old has already been part of the LFC Women senior team set-up for a few weeks and fans may have spotted her among the coaching staff for the wins over Crystal Palace, Arsenal and Manchester United.

"I'm really excited that Amber has asked for me to come in and join her staff group," she continued.

"I'm looking forward to that exposure and working within the senior game and building some connections with the players in the squad.

"I've been really welcomed by the staff and player group. It's nice to have the Scottish connection there with Jenna [Clark] and Sam [Kerr], who I've known for a couple of years from back home. Mostly I'm looking forward to being on the grass and working with all the players.

"We have a good base of a relationship with all being on the same site here at Melwood, so I know the girls and it's now about how I can help this environment as much as I can. It's been a great experience in the dugout so far."

Russell will work alongside assistant head coach Scott Rogers.

Interim boss Whiteley said: "Niamh's been progressing really well in the Pro Game Academy and has made a huge impact there.

"In this interim spell we wanted to give an opportunity for someone to come in and develop, because I was given similar opportunities in the past.

"She has fitted in straight away, which is testament to her character and the person she is."
