ReviewNewcastle 1-2 Liverpool: Analysis of 'world-class' contributions from Nunez and Alisson
In his regular Review Show, which is now available to watch on LFCTV GO, the former Red analysed the incredible comeback at St. James' Park that will live long in the memory.
"I always thought we would have a chance if we could keep it at 1-0," Mellor said. "And full credit to Darwin Nunez, he came on with the attitude that he wanted to influence the game.
"The equaliser was a world-class finish, it really was. How many players in the position he was in could finish like that? Very few.
"When it went to 1-1, many would have taken a point at that point, but the players sensed they could maybe get another one.
"The winner came from a brilliant pass from Mohamed Salah and what a moment when the ball hit the back of the net. Wow!"
Mellor also highlighted a spectacular save from Alisson Becker to deny Miguel Almiron's powerful drive in the first half, preventing the home side from going 2-0 up.
"World-class, absolutely world-class," he added. "Best goalkeeper in the world and he showed why, making big saves at a key moment in the game.
"I just wonder how much of a view did Alisson have when the strike came in as the power that Almiron generates makes it difficult for any goalkeeper to react.
"It was just an unbelievable save to keep it at 1-0."
