Five years as a Liverpool player has gone by in the blink of an eye for Harvey Elliott, who now wants to take on more responsibility within the team.

Sunday marks the anniversary of the gifted footballer's arrival at the Reds, joining from Fulham in the summer of 2019.

More than a century of appearances and five major honours later, the 21-year-old is aiming for further development both on and off the pitch in his sixth season as a Red.

Asked to reflect on his time at the club so far, Elliott told Liverpoolfc.com: "Wow, it's gone very quick! It's been five unbelievable years and hopefully many more to come.

"I just need to stay working hard and keep getting my head down and playing for this team and playing for the badge. I've loved every minute of it.

"I want to play more games this season, I want to start more [and] kind of cement my spot in the team. I'll do what it takes.

"I feel like I'm at the age now where I need to take a lot of responsibility on. It's upon myself now to go out and do it.

"This season is going to be a big one for me. I just need to keep working hard and keep taking on the responsibility myself and just apply it into everything that I do."

The No.19 can be considered a seasoned member of the Liverpool squad currently in the USA as part of preparations for 2024-25.

The travelling party that arrived in Pittsburgh on Tuesday includes a host of prospects from the Academy, with each of them able to tap into Elliott's experiences of rising through the game.

He stated: "I've been here five years on Sunday and I feel like throughout those five years I've always had those players around me to look after me, to take me under their wing and give me pointers.

"Some of the young lads are really young – I was a bit scared to speak to people and ask questions – but I feel like if I can be around them, if I can help them a little bit or just even let them know that I'm there if they need anything.

"I wouldn't say it's really my job but I'm just doing that because I've had that as well and it helped me out a lot to get where I am today.

"Everyone here are unbelievable players and we want to get them to the best possible place in their career. As I said, if I can help them out then I can."

After five years of being guided by Jürgen Klopp, there is a new voice in Elliott's ear this season in head coach Arne Slot.

The challenge of adapting to fresh tactical ideas and ways of working is one seemingly welcomed by Elliott and his teammates.

"It's one of them where you need to kind of forget what you've learned in the last couple of years and learn new things," he explained.

"But that's football. You're always learning, you're always having to adapt and to be a better player, be a better person.

"It's one of those situations now [where] we just need to keep on going and keep listening to the staff and the boss, and make sure we apply it into the games and into the training sessions. I'm sure we'll be fine."

On pre-season so far, Elliott added: "It's a lot different for obvious reasons – new management in, new staff, new style of play. We're all trying to get our heads around it.

"But we've had a few weeks now, played a game back in Liverpool and I feel like the lads are coping really, really well.

"Especially with the style of play, it's really enjoyable to play in and it's a new skill to learn. It's a great opportunity to learn things and learn different things. To do it out here, it's great."
