News'On The Button' – LFC retro kits inspire new artwork unveiled at Anfield
Brand-new artwork has been unveiled at Anfield inspired by Liverpool FC’s classic kits from yesteryear.
Located on 97 Avenue, the installation is part of the wider regeneration of the stadium which, over the past decade, has included two new and improved stands to increase capacity to 61,000.
‘On the Button’ was created by Liverpool artist Leo Fitzmaurice, who used his own childhood memories of retro kits and the LFC museum as inspiration by looking at its artefacts, old programmes, posters, photographs, flags and shirts before landing on the kit idea, and the fascinating stories behind the designs.
It features 16 different-sized circular pieces, each with a different retro kit from the LFC archives, the fabric of this club. The installation is aiming to make personal connections with supporters and evoke memories of classic kits.
Featuring a range of home, away, third and goalkeeper kits from the early 1980s to the present day, including the famous yellow and red away design from 1982-84 alongside the 2021-22 third kit, which was inspired by its predecessor. Plus, there are a selection of classic ’90s goalkeeper kits.
Fitzmaurice said: “The kits often reflect LFC’s history, community and the city’s creative and cultural links. I wanted to use this in my brief to represent the designs in a new, engaging way.
“The artwork is bright and energetic, using pattern and scale to convey a sense of movement and space. It aims to encourage an ongoing interaction between lifelong supporters and newer fans through the retelling of personal stories and memories about the artwork’s inspiration.”
Fitzmaurice was one of three artists shortlisted for the opportunity in collaboration with Liverpool City Council.
This latest art addition to Anfield is part of Liverpool City Council’s planning conditions for the new Anfield Road Stand to develop and enhance the public art provision around the stadium.
