ReactionAlexis Mac Allister: We couldn't control the game - but we take the point and move on
Alexis Mac Allister was left frustrated at Liverpool's lack of control in their 2-2 draw with Manchester United at Anfield on Sunday.
The Reds had worked themselves into a 2-1 lead midway through the second half of the Premier League contest with Cody Gakpo's excellent equaliser and a Mohamed Salah penalty after Lisandro Martinez had opened the scoring.
But the visitors would leave L4 with a point when Amad Diallo swept home 10 minutes before the end of the 90.
Afterwards, Mac Allister offered his assessment of the game to Liverpoolfc.com – read on to see what he had to say.
Alexis, you'll be disappointed with the result but is a point apiece a fair reflection of the game?
I think the team is really disappointed. It's not what we wanted but at the end it's a fair result. I think we couldn't control the game as we wanted. So, we have to take the point and move on.
You mentioned the word 'control'. That has been the consistent thing this season that you find a way and you control the game. That was probably lacking a little bit...
Definitely, I think we couldn't get to the positions that we wanted. We looked like [we were] in a rush. We are not happy with the performance at all but at the end it's a point and we are still top of the league, so that's important.
Was there anything that you tried to change at half-time?
Not really, just to remind [us of] the positions that we had to occupy, the way we wanted to press. But I think in the second half it was like a crazy game, we conceded too many chances, we had our opportunities as well to score goals. But as I said, I think it's a fair result.
The response to going a goal down was good...
I think the mentality is there and that's really important as a team to come back like we did today. But at the end when you are winning 2-1 [after] 75 minutes, you have to defend the result and we couldn't do it.
It might take a day or two to reflect that when you're not at your best it's important not to lose the game...
Sure, sure. I think we have so many games coming, so there is no time to think about the past. We have to think about the future and improve the things that we did wrong.
You're still six points clear at the top of the table...
Exactly. We have to be very positive. I think today is going to be a day to reflect but from tomorrow on we are going to keep being positive and that's going to be important for the team.
