Major Events and Concerts

Over the past few years, the Club have successfully hosted a number of high-profile major events at the stadium which has contributed more than £31.3M into our local economy. As Anfield Stadium continues to establish itself in the concert and major events market, successfully competing against other UK and North-West venues to secure big names acts, the stadium has become a popular venue for summer concerts. Bringing major events to our City and local area not only boosts our local economy and provides job opportunities but also supports our Local Authority’s cultural strategy and status as a designated City of Music by UNESCO.

At present we have a temporary, five season, permission to hold up to six major events, on top of our regular football fixtures, in each calendar year. When we initially made our application to Liverpool City Council, we were conscious that typically, the summer football closed season provides our neighbours with some respite from the impacts of major events at the stadium and we committed to keeping an event-free period during the summer football break period when no major events would take place. Currently, this event free period is for 31 days during the month of July.

Hosting a one-off major event at Anfield Stadium at the beginning of July 2025

During the summer of 2025, we have so far confirmed one major event, a Dua Lipa concert, scheduled to take place on 24 June. The club has recently been presented with the opportunity to bring a major global act to the stadium at the beginning of July 2025, which falls within the existing 31-day event-free period. While we remain firmly committed to honouring the 31-day break, we want to seek your views on moving the event-free period slightly for summer 2025 to begin after that July concert. For the avoidance of doubt, there would still be a clear period of 31 consecutive event-free days during the summer football closed season and we would clearly communicate the new start date to residents once determined. The concert, if confirmed, would also be operated in accordance with our planning permission and its supporting operational and transport strategies and plans, which will continue to underpin all of our major event activities.

Greater flexibility to host major events during the summer football close season period

Looking further ahead, and given our dealings with event and concert promoters on the 2019, 2022 and 2024 concerts, we have identified that there is a demand for concerts at larger venues during the first two weeks of July. Our current permission has three seasons remaining (including 2025). Therefore, we are also exploring the possibility of amending that permission to have greater flexibility for scheduling major events during the summer football closed season for the remaining three seasons generally. Again, in all instances, we remain wholly committed to retaining the 31-day event-free period and are simply seeking some flexibility on when these events can take place.

Each year, we work alongside Liverpool City Council, Merseytravel and other key stakeholders to ensure that the operational plans we have in place to minimise the impact that these events may have on the local community are implemented, monitored and reviewed. We remain committed to maintaining this process and working closely with our community to address any concerns as soon as possible.

What is the benefit of close season major events and concerts for the local area?

Attracting major events boosts our regional visitor economy and helps capitalise upon the international reputation of Liverpool as a music city. The local benefit includes additional employment opportunities, particularly for those who live in Liverpool and our young people, and support to the city’s wider tourism and hospitality sector.

Do these proposals mean the event free period will be shorter than it has in the past?

No. The event free period will always be a minimum of 31 consecutive days over the summer.

What happens next?

Following consultation with the local community, we will be submitting separate applications for each matter to Liverpool City Council in early October for their consideration. We will ensure members of the community are kept informed about the progress of the applications.
