The PL Changemakers programme aims to support girls and young women in developing their personal skills and positive attitudes for leadership.

The programme, together with the LFC Foundation, aim to encourage all participants to full potential and lead positive change in their communities in relation to gender equality and mental health. It also seeks to improve participants mental and physical wellbeing.

The programme consisted of 3 days of activities where the girls from Lord Derby Academy met with LFC guest speakers including Liverpool Womens Player Gemma Bonner and Matchday Planning Coordinator, Faye Brookes.

The guests talked about their career journeys and the obstacles they had to overcome to be where they are today. Whilst both jobs are so different from each other, what the girls took away from the sessions were similar – being a female in what is perceived as a male dominant career can be tough, but you have to make sure you work hard and understand your huge potential.

Day two of the programme involved the LFC Foundation Mental Health Team deliver a health and wellbeing workshop to the young girls. Hannah, who works for the Action for Children in partnership with the LFC Foundation, came in to talk to the girls about her journey career journey. Hannah's workshop talked about her own struggles with mental health, friendship groups and how to step back when needed. It was very well received by the girls.

Day three made a lot of the girls step out of their comfort zone – a trip to Moel Famau.

The trip was designed to both benefit and challenge the girl - a time away from phones (at least from call and internet signal) and the active element, being out in nature, was such a great way to improve their physical and mental health, linking back to the sentiment from the previous two days of the programme. After two sunny days spent in school attending the workshops, unfortunately the weather on the day of the trip was poor. However, this didn't deter the girls and they took on the challenge of the walk with a smile on their face and a positive attitude, supporting each other and staff alike in some of the more challenging elements - the route specifically chosen to test resilience which all girls demonstrated throughout.

We are so proud of the young girls who took part in the programme. From mental health, team building to leadership and communication, the girls took away some vital skills and knowledge on how to become a more positive person and use this to propel forward into their next chapters in school and beyond.

Here is what some of them had to say:

‘I enjoyed building stronger relationships with my classmates’

‘I enjoyed stepping out of my comfort zone.’

‘We’d love a longer programme!’
