Robertson captained his country against Poland in Warsaw and in doing so brought up the total of 80 appearances in senior international football – the joint-third-most for Scotland’s men’s side.

Reds teammate Ben Doak had assisted the visitors’ opener with a pullback to John McGinn in the third minute of the UEFA Nations League clash.

The hosts levelled just prior to the hour mark, but Robertson dramatically grabbed a 2-1 victory for the Scots in added time with an excellent header at the far post.

“It’s all about the team and all about the win, but this stadium holds a special place in my heart,” he said post-match.

“There’s not many around the world and this is definitely one of them. Obviously 10, 11 years ago I made my debut here in a 1-0 win, which was the proudest moment of my career. I had all my family here and things like that.

“I didn’t know how many caps I was going to get after that but to then come back here and now be top three and join an absolute legend in Darren Fletcher, who I was very fortunate enough to share a changing room with, it’s great for me.

“I’m not a very emotional person but when you think about it… I just love playing for this country and to be able to get one cap, never mind 80, is such a special feeling.

“That [the goal] was the cherry on top in the last minute, probably nobody expected that tonight! To get that goal and get the win for the boys… I wish I scored more for my country because that feeling is like no other. Hopefully maybe there’s a couple more to come.”

Elsewhere in the Nations League, Conor Bradley was on target for Northern Ireland five minutes into the second half of their eventual 2-2 draw at Luxembourg.

The Liverpool defender also netted with a back-post header – a fourth strike at senior level for his country – before Luxembourg rallied from two down to equalise.

Bradley was subsequently named Player of the Match.
