InterviewWhy it was a 'no-brainer' for Sofie Lundgaard to sign new LFC Women contract
Sofie Lundgaard says she has fulfilled another dream by extending her time as a Liverpool FC Women player.
The midfielder committed her future to the Reds when she put pen to paper on a new contract at the AXA Melwood Training Centre on Friday.
Lundgaard joined Matt Beard's squad in January 2023 from Fortuna Hjorring in her homeland of Denmark and feels entirely at home on and off the pitch.
Read on for our interview with the 22-year-old just after she inked fresh terms with Liverpool…
On extending her time at LFC Women...
I'm really happy and proud to extend my contract with Liverpool. I think it's a dream come true again and I really enjoy being here. It was really a no-brainer for me.
On settling into the club and city since joining...
It's unreal to be in Melwood, the facilities are so good and we have everything we need to perform on the pitch as well. I think that's great. I enjoy living in the city. I think it's really nice that everything is so close and we also have the water nearby. I enjoy my time here.
On the AXA Melwood Training Centre...
The fact that we get to go in here every single day to do our job, I think that's really nice. As I said before, we have everything we need. There's no excuse not to perform on the pitch now.
On her own form before suffering an injury last season...
Last season I think the team did so well. So when Beardy gave me the chance to go in and perform, I think it was not really that hard because everyone was at the top performance level. The injury came in a really bad time for me – I mean an injury never comes in a good time – but especially [in] that period of time I was in good form and I really enjoyed playing again.
On whether the injury has helped her become stronger mentally...
Yeah, 100 per cent. I think I really have a motivation now to do well and come back into the team. I think I've had a good pre-season, so I'm just really excited to get started on Sunday.
On the new arrivals to the squad and helping Swedish forward Cornelia Kapocs settle in...
I love my Scandies here! I was obviously buzzing when I heard that she was coming. She's a really nice girl and I think we're actually really similar. I think that also helps me to make this feel even more as a home.
On the spirit within the team...
I think it's really important to get on outside the pitch as well and that's also something which shows on the pitch that we really have each other's back. We go in here every single day to work [and] I think it's important to be happy. I know everyone is doing everything they can to make people feel welcome so they can do what they have to do on the pitch as well.
On whether she's set some personal targets for the new season...
I always have a lot of targets for myself. I just want to help the team to perform well and, of course, I also have the national team on the other side. Yeah, there's a few things.
On her aims to break into the senior Denmark national team...
It will be an honour to play for Denmark. It's a dream I've had for many years. So hopefully I'm going to achieve that soon but right now I'm just going to focus on what's happening in the club and to do well here. One step at a time.
On the Barclays Women's Super League opener against Leicester City at St Helens Stadium...
I can't wait. I'm so excited. It's been a long pre-season now and I think we are more than ready now to go out on Sunday and do a good performance in our new home.
On LFC Women's support...
It was lovely to see them last Sunday. Their support means everything to us and the support they show us week in, week out is unreal. I can't wait to see them this season as well.
