Liverpool FC Women midfielder Zara Shaw is set for a spell on the sidelines due to an anterior cruciate ligament injury.

Shaw sustained the issue during the first half of the Reds’ pre-season friendly against Birmingham City Women last Sunday.

The England U17 international was withdrawn at the interval having gone down off the ball and subsequent diagnosis has confirmed an ACL injury.

Shaw will now begin a rehabilitation programme at the club, with LFC Women boss Matt Beard offering full support from staff and teammates.

“We’re all extremely disappointed for Zara and everyone at the club will be supporting her with the rehabilitation process,” said Beard.

“We’re lucky to have a close-knit group of players and excellent medical staff here who can help her throughout, as people will have seen on Sunday with Ceri [Holland], Miri [Taylor] and Sofie [Lundgaard], amongst others, going straight over to comfort her when the injury first happened.

“She’s really impressed us during pre-season so far, not only with the maturity in her play for someone of her years but with the way she is around the place too.

“It’s a blow for us not to have her complement the group as we continue to prepare for the WSL season – but the most important thing now is us all rallying around her for the journey ahead.”
