MatchWSL: Eight stats to know ahead of Liverpool v Crystal Palace

The Reds’ home clash with the Eagles takes place at St Helens Stadium on Sunday afternoon, with kick-off set for 2pm BST. Tickets for the match are available here.

Opta have provided the following facts and figures ahead of the WSL meeting…

Liverpool won 10 straight games against newly promoted opposition in the WSL between 2016 and 2018, though the Reds have since only won two of six matches against such opponents in the competition (one draw, three losses).

The Reds last met Palace in their 2021-22 FA Women’s Championship title-winning campaign, winning both games (2-1 at home and 4-0 away).

Liverpool have lost only two of their last 14 WSL games (eight victories, four draws).

They have scored first in each of their last six WSL matches, their best run since between November 2016 and May 2017 (seven games).

Matt Beard’s team have scored 27 goals in 16 games in 2024 in the WSL, only one fewer than they did in 23 games in 2023 (28). The Reds’ 1.7 goals per game in 2024 is their best in a calendar year in the WSL since 2017, when they scored 27 goals in 13 games (2.1 per game).

Palace are one of three teams yet to score a first-half goal in the WSL this season. In the first halves of matches, they have had the fewest shots (11) and shots on target (one). By contrast, opponents Liverpool are yet to concede a first-half goal.

Liverpool’s Marie Höbinger has created the most chances from set plays in the WSL (seven) and has made the most successful crosses (11) of any player this season, while only one player has played more passes into the opposition box (33).

After losing 4-0 in their first away WSL game to Tottenham Hotspur, Palace won 2-0 at Leicester City last time out on the road. The only two newly promoted teams to win as many as two of their first three away WSL games are Spurs in 2019 and Aston Villa in 2020 (both two out of three).
