Interview'We're not a team, we're a family' - Harvey Elliott on togetherness, Brentford win and Darwin Nunez

Darwin Nunez scored twice in stoppage time to secure a dramatic, and vital, 2-0 victory for the Premier League leaders at Gtech Community Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The delight for the No.9 from his teammates was clear to see during the brilliant goal celebrations in front of the away supporters and Elliott – who teed up Nunez for his second – believes those scenes showcased the spirit and togetherness within Arne Slot’s squad.

Elliott told Liverpoolfc.com: “I think it just sums up this team. Everyone has so much love for one another. We’re not a team, we’re a family and whoever scores, whoever is playing, whoever is not playing, we’re all together as one and we want to do everything for the club.

“We have high ambitions this season and we all need to play a part, but as I said, whoever scores, it’s just an amazing feeling as a team. Celebrating with not only your teammates but your friends, people that you’re close with, it’s just great.

“He [Nunez] is a great guy and his hunger and desire on the pitch, you can’t fault him – as you can see in each and every game.”

On the game and how it ended…

It was a tough game. I think we knew that as players and whoever was watching the game could see that, but at the end of the day the game is 90 minutes long, if not longer, and you need to keep going until the end. I think that’s what we did as a collective, as a team and as a club, we kept fighting, kept trying to create and more importantly put away the chances. But as long as that fight and desire was there it was always going to come, and luckily it came at the end.

On what it was like being part of the celebrations for Nunez’s first goal…

Absolutely [great to be part of]. I just thought, I already knew he was going to get a yellow card for taking his shirt off so I didn’t want him to do anything else and get a red card because we needed him! But it’s just raw emotion, especially in front of the away supporters as well. There’s no better feeling than scoring goals and winning games and just to celebrate in front of our fans is just a moment you can’t really describe.

On his own contribution, which included an assist for Nunez’s second goal…

As I said, it’s a team game: whether you’re starting or on the bench, you need to be ready. It’s a matter of fact. You don’t know when you’re going to be called upon – it could be games, it could be each and every game you’re starting. We’re aiming for high ambitions this season and we need to do it all as a team. It’s just not 11 players constantly playing, everyone needs to be involved and so many people have influenced the game from the bench if they haven’t played and today’s one of those games. Darwin comes on and scores two and it’s the situation: I think it shows to everyone that no matter what the situation you need to be ready because the chances will come and you just need to take them like today.

On whether this feels like the kind of result that could prove to be crucial at the end of the season…

Yeah, absolutely, but I don’t think we’re looking that far ahead at the moment. We’re just taking it game by game and just making sure that we win. It’s more of a confidence booster for us now to go into the next game and as I said, we’re just keeping taking it game by game and hopefully getting points on the board and then at the end of the season we can look back and single out games like today where special moments happened. We can reflect on it then but the job is nowhere near done, it’s still very early. We just need to keep going and keep pushing and we’ll review it at the end of the season.
