Reaction'We will focus on ourselves' – Mac Allister and Szoboszlai react to Newcastle win
Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai insisted Liverpool will continue to focus on themselves after moving 13 points clear at the top of the Premier League.
Arne Slot's side earned a 2-0 victory over Newcastle United at Anfield on Wednesday night, with Mac Allister following Szoboszlai on to the scoresheet.
Szoboszlai initially broke the deadlock in the 11th minute of the contest, and Mac Allister doubled the Reds' advantage a little after the hour mark.
Following the full-time whistle, the pair gave their post-match thoughts to TNT Sports. Read on for their reaction…
Mac Allister
On having a strong consistency of performances and results…
I think it's the desire. The desire to win trophies. We know that this season we have maybe the opportunity to win some, so we are really happy working really hard. Hopefully we can keep on going.
On the timing of his goal and Liverpool's second strike proving vital…
We didn't start the second half as we wanted. It was nice because I like to get to this position. Sometimes I don't get the ball, but this time Mo [Salah] played it, so [I'm] really happy for that.
On whether it feels like a 'luxury' to have seven days before the next game…
Yes, definitely. We need it. We were talking and we were a little bit tired, but this week it will be nice to get some rest and some days off. Thanks to Arne as well!
Szoboszlai
On whether he is in the best form of his career currently…
It's my second season so it was not a long time I had any chance to score twice [in a row] in a different game. I'm really happy to help the team. The most important [thing] is the team. If I can score even more goals back-to-back I would be happy, but until we are in the first position of the league I am more happy.
On moving 13 points clear at the top of the table and when they can start to 'dream'…
After mathematically they have no chance to get us! We are really happy to be 13 points clear, but we will focus on ourselves. Now we have the Champions League coming up, so we will have to focus on this as well. Then game by game we are looking forward to staying at the top.
On whether Liverpool are targeting three trophies this season…
When I came to Liverpool I wanted to win everything in my first season! I don't like to talk about it. We have to focus as I said game by game. First [in the] Champions League we have to go through, we have a Premier League game in between, then we have a cup final against them [Newcastle]. [They are a] really tough team. They have a really good playing style, so we have to be ready. We will focus first in the Champions League and then the cup final is coming up as well.
