ReactionWataru Endo: I am so proud of this team – we fought until the end
Wataru Endo spoke of his pride in nine-man Liverpool’s performance after they succumbed to a stoppage-time defeat at Tottenham Hotspur.
Joel Matip’s unfortunate 96th-minute own goal meant the hosts claimed a 2-1 win at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday evening, with the Reds having impressively stood firm after Diogo Jota was dismissed in the 69th minute to reduce them to nine players.
Curtis Jones had been sent off midway through the first half of the Premier League clash, with Luis Diaz then seeing a goal ruled out for offside that should have been awarded via VAR before Son Heung-min gave Spurs the lead.
Cody Gakpo equalised in added time of the opening period but had to be substituted at the break due to injury, and Endo believes Liverpool deserve credit for the way in which they dealt with all manner of adversity.
The No.3, who came off the bench soon after Jota’s second booking, told Liverpoolfc.com: “At the end, a very tough game but there were 50-50 decisions in the game and yeah, it’s very difficult to play with nine players. But I wanted to get one point so I am very disappointed about it.
“I am just so proud of this team. I am just disappointed. We have to learn from this result and of course we showed our spirit, even though we faced difficult decisions we fought until the end.
“That’s Liverpool and always we have to try to win the game. We can learn from this game but we just keep going.”
On Matip, Endo said: “Actually, he played an amazing game today so no-one can say something to him. I am so proud of what he did today and I am so proud of what my teammates did today.”
