Q&AThe view from West Ham: 'Look out for Scamacca'
Liverpool will aim to follow up their dramatic 1-0 victory over Manchester City last weekend when they host the Hammers in the Premier League.
David Moyes’ side make the journey north on an unbeaten run of five matches in all competitions as they juggle the top flight with Europa Conference League action.
To find out more about the visitors’ form, danger men and more, we spoke to West Ham supporter Vinny Genco…
Talk us through West Ham’s season so far… from the outside, it seems like some mixed league form but excellent European results?
It wasn’t a great start to the season and there were some games where things didn’t go our way. Bringing in nine new players, it was always going to take some time for the team to adapt. The European results seem to now be bringing confidence into our league matches.
How has David Moyes tweaked his team and set-up from last season?
I think the biggest change is the options that we now have going forward, which was something we really lacked. There was a lot of pressure on Michail Antonio and Jarrod Bowen last year and now being able to rotate with Gianluca Scamacca, Maxwel Cornet and Lucas Paqueta it’s great to have options.
After finishing seventh last season and sixth the year before, what are the hopes and targets among Hammers fans this term?
To be challenging for European football again, so another top-seven finish. Also to win the Europa Conference League. After getting so close in the Europa League last year, to go and win this one would be massive.
Who has been the team’s standout player so far and why?
There have been a few players who have stood out so far. Declan Rice is a class act, the way he breaks up play and starts attacks. Also, Scamacca has hit the ground running and looks like a constant threat.
Which of your summer signings should Liverpool fans be looking out for?
The summer signings seem to be settling in now. Paqueta is starting to show why we were so excited when he signed, with a few assists recently, and Thilo Kehrer looks like a quality signing. But Scamacca is the one I’d be worried about. He holds the ball up well and has an eye for goal.
What is your favourite previous trip to Anfield?
There’s not been many successful trips to Anfield so I’ll have to go with our 3-0 win in 2015.
If you could add one Liverpool player into the West Ham team, who would it be and why?
I’d have to say Mohamed Salah. The way he takes on players and the goals he scores are hard to resist.
Finally, what is your score prediction?
I think it will be a close game. My head says 2-1 Liverpool but I’m going to go for 1-1.
