Q&AThe view from Arsenal with... Joel Corry
Liverpool head to Premier League pacesetters Arsenal this afternoon for an eagerly anticipated contest at Emirates Stadium.
Heading into the ninth round of league fixtures, the Gunners led the standings after claiming victory in seven of their eight games – most recently a 3-1 win over rivals Tottenham Hotspur.
For the lowdown on Mikel Arteta's in-form side, we caught up with DJ and Arsenal fan Joel Corry, who also explains why he has a soft spot for Reds boss Jürgen Klopp...
Joel, thanks for chatting with us. It looks like it's a good time to be an Arsenal fan…
Yeah man, top of the league! The good times might be back – but I'm not getting too ahead of myself yet. It's still early in the season and you know Arsenal... I'm not getting ahead of myself yet but this is the best start to a season we've had in so long. I think the energy and vibe around the club feels amazing. And playing good football, I think the team is really starting to gel now.
Obviously we're coming off the north London derby win on the weekend, which was amazing. Apart from the loss to Man United, we're unbeaten this season, which is amazing. We're feeling really solid. I think our biggest test yet is going to be on Sunday against Liverpool but it's at the Emirates. We haven't got a good track record against you guys but this season feels different. This is the biggest test yet but I think it's our best chance of overcoming Liverpool in this game. If we do, I think people will seriously be starting to consider us as actual title contenders.
You touched on it then but when will you start dreaming big?
That's why I said I'm not getting ahead of myself because I know with Arsenal sometimes it feels too good to be true! It's the best vibes the club has had in such a long time. Obviously we've got the World Cup coming and then there's going to be a mad run of games. If we can just get through this winter in this form and if we get to the start of next year and we're still sort of in the same position, that's when I'll probably be starting to get really excited.

Who's been the standout performer for Arsenal so far?
Gabriel Jesus is what we needed. I was excited when he signed from Man City, I was really buzzing about it. He's just hit the ground running and definitely brought energy to the club. What a great signing – I'm saying one of the best signings we've had in years, just the impact he's had.
On top of that, Martinelli is playing really well. Xhaka is having a great season so far and is such an important part of our team. Obviously he's been a player that's had his moments but maybe this is the season where he has a really well-rounded, strong season. Also Odegaard's playing great as well.
Another player that's standing out is Zinchenko. When he's fit and plays, he's doing really well and he's such a versatile player – he seems to be able to play up the field as well as left-back. The whole team in general just feels like it's gelling really well.
And your thoughts on the manager Mikel Arteta? He had a difficult start but made some big calls and is doing really well at the moment…
The big calls are paying off. He had an up-and-down journey so far as the manager. But it looks like he had a plan and it's come together. Arsenal gave him that time that he needed. This is the best football we've played in such a long time and I feel like Arteta's doing a great job. Maybe the work he's done over the last few seasons is going to finally come into fruition. It feels like the supporters have really got behind him now.
Has this start to the campaign surprised you, or were there signs that this rise was coming?
I think that's the thing that was so frustrating about Arsenal – that we'd have a few good games and play really well; we'd all be like, 'We're back, this is the Arsenal we always wanted.' Then we'd go on a terrible run of form and there'd be all the negativity. That was what it was like for years with Arsenal. I feel like there were glimpses of what Arteta could do and the vision. I think now it's finally gelled.
I know you'll want to beat his team but there must be a part of you that is a fan of Jürgen Klopp after he threw some shapes to your tune after the Carabao Cup final…
That was such a good moment. I posted it on my social media – I couldn't believe it! It's always mad for me when I see someone that's like a celebrity or someone I really respect dancing to my music or singing the lyrics of my records. I sent it to all my friends and went, 'Can you believe Klopp is properly getting up to Head & Heart?' That was a really cool moment. I love Klopp. I can't think of anyone that would have a bad word to say about Klopp. He's the manager that probably everybody would want at their club. I love him as well. When you see him in interviews, his character, his energy. He's just so great to have in the Premier League.
Just finally, your prediction for the game?
I think our history against Liverpool is terrible in recent history. In our last eight meetings, I think we're winless, so Liverpool are always that team that seems to get a result against us. But this season is feeling different and we're top of the league and it's at the Emirates. I think it's going to be a goalfest, I think it's going to be a really exciting game. I'm going to go 3-2 to Arsenal.
