Youth League match report: Wright scores hat-trick in stunning Liverpool comeback win at LASK

Will Wright’s hat-trick inspired Liverpool to come from two goals down and clinch a 4-2 victory at LASK in the UEFA Youth League.

The Reds’ U19s fell behind as Paul Krapf and Jonas Ilk scored for the hosts either side of half-time in Austria on Wednesday.

But a quickfire Wright double ahead of the hour mark hauled Rob Page’s team level – and he then set up Luca Eden to put the visitors in front six minutes before the end.

Wright then capped off a captain’s performance – and secured the three points – by burying a penalty for his treble.

Liverpool made a shaky start at Waldstadion and would have trailed within the first few minutes were it not for one Bailey Hall save and wasteful play from LASK.

Having begun to settle, the Reds crafted their first real chance on the quarter-hour.

The industrious Oliver O’Connor beat his markers on the right flank and sent in a low cross that was heading towards Finn Inglethorpe, only to be cut out by Jakob Wansch.

Mor Talla Ndiaye had to produce his own saving tackle back at the other end, but the home team then went ahead on 23 minutes.

Goalkeeper Hall was out of position at a long throw-in from the right, allowing Jonas Hattinger to hook the ball across the area for Krapf to convert.

It might have been 2-0 to LASK shortly after.

Prince Cisse was caught in possession inside his own half and Krapf bounded through towards goal, though this time he dragged his finish wide.

Liverpool’s threat was largely from the wings and a Joe Bradshaw run and cross offered skipper Wright a ball to attack, with a difficult header drifting off target.

Hall had to glove a decent Ilk strike almost 25 yards from goal around the post just ahead of the interval.

With AJ Yeguo introduced at the restart, the Reds made a bright beginning to the second half – but it was LASK who netted.

Krapf’s dangerous effort from the edge of the area was well saved by Hall; however, from the resulting corner Ilk was able to head in yards out.

The Austrian side were a lick of paint away from making it 3-0 as Luca Ortner got into space inside the box and hit the crossbar.

Liverpool’s let-off proved to be a transformational moment in the game.

Within seconds, Wright was played in behind and showed strength, balance and composure to slot past the goalkeeper and halve the deficit.

On the hour, the striker was at it again, glancing in a headed equaliser from a curling delivery into the middle from the left.

The Reds had now gained majority control of proceedings and a late salvo completed a brilliant turnaround for Page’s charges.

With 84 on the clock, Wright rounded the ’keeper from Erik Farkas’ threaded pass and – having been pushed wide – squared for the supporting Eden to score.

They were soon awarded a penalty for a foul on Yeguo, and up stepped Wright to coolly roll home the kick, making it three goals for him and three points for Liverpool.
