AcademyU21s match report: Liverpool hit four in comeback against Wolves
Barry Lewtas’ charges were already looking to deliver a response to preceding defeats against Everton and Hertha BSC in Kirkby.
And their task increased midway through the first half at the Academy when Harvey Griffiths converted a penalty to give Wolves an advantage, squeezing his kick inside the right post despite Kornel Misciur diving the right way.
The response from the Reds was impressive, however, and within 15 minutes of that concession they had netted three times themselves.
Trey Nyoni provided the equaliser by shimmying into the area and slotting in a low finish from Dominic Corness’ assist after a good press.
A Lee Jonas header bounced away off the crossbar before Kieran Morrison set up each of the next two goals.
The first came when the ball was recycled from the above move, with Ranel Young – fresh from being named in the senior squad at Brighton & Hove Albion in midweek – flicking in a cross to put the hosts ahead.
Tom Hill enhanced their lead moments later with a perfect, first-time volley from Morrison’s delivery into the near post from the left.
Lewtas’ side were buoyant and they needed just eight minutes of the second half to score their fourth goal of the afternoon.
Morrison made it a hat-trick of assists with a clip over the top to set up Young, whose special week continued with his second strike – the forward’s fifth goal this season – as he controlled with his chest and prodded in.
And that proved more than enough for the Reds to secure a sixth victory in eight Premier League 2 fixtures.
