The Reds have booked their place in next Friday's draw for the last eight, despite suffering a 1-0 defeat at home to Internazionale on Tuesday evening.

The goals from Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah in the first leg of the last-16 tie were enough to send Jürgen Klopp's men through.

"That's all that mattered to us," Alexander-Arnold told Liverpoolfc.com. "We are disappointed obviously not to get the win but all that mattered to us was getting through to the next round.

"It's important for the club, it's important for us as a team and the fans, so that's all that mattered.

"We're in an amazing position. We've been able to get our hands on the first trophy of the season and are in a strong position in all the other three competitions.

"We have two exciting quarter-finals to look forward to, a cup final every weekend in the league.

"So, it's exciting times to be at the club, to be in these games, and hopefully if everyone stays fit we'll be able to see it through."

Lautaro Martinez's second-half strike won the Anfield affair for the Serie A champions, whose job was then made more difficult when they had Alexis Sanchez sent off.

Liverpool themselves created plenty of chances on the night, including Joel Matip and Mohamed Salah (twice) being denied by the woodwork.

Alexander-Arnold continued: "Being 2-0 down, we expected them to come out and attack us more and that's what we prepared for.

"I think as time went on, we created our chances, we had chances to score goals, we didn't take them – but we limited them to only the one goal.

"I think if we scored in the first half, we could have put the game to bed kind of but we weren't able to do that. And obviously them going down to 10 men helped us see the game out and they never had much threat since then.

"It wasn't comfortable – of course it wasn't comfortable – but we were able to see it out."
