AcademyTerence Miles: Derby goal was for my nan
Terence Miles revealed why his fine strike in Liverpool U21s' 4-0 win over Everton on Monday night was a poignant moment for him.
Barry Lewtas’ side started the new Premier League 2 season in style at the Academy, with Mateusz Musialowski, Tom Hill and Bobby Clark also on the mark.
Miles, 18, got the second goal when he ventured forward from right-back and struck home his first at U21s level with an unstoppable effort.
“You can’t ask for much more than that: a derby win, a clean sheet and a goal, so I’m buzzing!” Miles told Liverpoolfc.com.
“For my goal, I had a chance before that which I squared it so I thought I’ll hit this and it went in.
“That goal meant a lot to me. My mum was here for the first time to watch me play, I lost my nan a few weeks ago, so to score that tonight meant a lot. That was for her.”
Miles played his part in an all-round team display that Lewtas labelled ‘outstanding’.
“I thought we were relentless,” the defender added.
“In the first half we had all the chances but couldn’t score, but we knew it was coming and in the second half we came out and we dominated again.
“It could have been more than 4-0. I thought we were very good, everyone put in a very good performance and I’m proud of the lads and proud of everyone.”
Miles has now made the permanent step up to the U21s and has already played at centre-back, right-back and holding midfield.
“I’ll play anywhere, whatever the gaffer wants from me I will do,” he said.
“I’ve loved it being with the U21s in pre-season, being in every day at the AXA Training Centre. I mean, you are not getting a better place than that to work at, it’s the place to be.”
