CommunityTenth edition of Run For The 97 raises £4,000 for local causes

The event celebrated and honoured the lives of the 97 supporters who died as a result of the tragedy at Hillsborough on April 15, 1989, as well as their families and the survivors.

Special guests at Stanley Park on Saturday May 25 included former Liverpool players Jamie Carragher, Chris Kirkland, Alan Kennedy and Sammy Lee.

They were joined by family members of those who lost their lives in the disaster and Hillsborough Law campaigners in Margaret Aspinall, Steve Kelly and Sue Roberts.

The charity fun run saw 1,500 participants complete either a five-kilometre or one-mile distance, with a further 200 taking part virtually from all over the world.

The money raised will go to support LFC Foundation, 23 Foundation and Liverpool-based parkruns.

Liverpool and Everton supporters stood side by side as the clubs' anthems – You'll Never Walk Alone and Z Cars – were played ahead of the run and then joined in with a minute's applause.

The five-kilometre route took runners through Stanley Park, along Walton Lane, Priory Road, Arkles Lane and back into the park before passing the Eternal Flame on 97 Avenue at Anfield, where many paused to take a moment to pay their respects at the Hillsborough Memorial.

Family attractions and activities on the day included a visit from LFC mascot Mighty Red and football skills from LFC Foundation's Go Play team, who take sport into local parks throughout the year.

Since it was first staged in 2015, Run For The 97 has raised almost £45,000 for worthwhile causes in the city.
