AnalysisTalking points v Villa: Klopp's landmark win, Salah 150 up and Szoboszlai opens account

The Reds recorded three more points on Sunday thanks to strikes from Szoboszlai and Mohamed Salah either side of a Matty Cash own goal.

Here are five talking points from the contest...

Klopp's landmark victory

The Anfield clash saw the boss take charge of his 300th Premier League match for the Reds.

Liverpool brought up the landmark in style, cruising to victory having netted their opener in just the third minute of the match.

Since taking charge in October 2015, Klopp's top-flight record stands at 188 wins, 69 draws and 43 defeats.

Darwin Nunez – despite not finding the back of the net – was a particular standout in the win, striking the woodwork on numerous occasions and wreaking havoc in the Villa backline to drive Liverpool on.

His pace and movement led to a Cash own goal, with the ball hitting the post before coming off the defender and going over the line from the No.9's low strike.

He did, however, notch an assist for Salah's effort on his first start of the season.

Captain Trent

The Scouser in our team.

Trent Alexander-Arnold took the armband at Anfield and in the Premier League for the first ever time in his senior career on Sunday.

Having been named vice-captain in the summer, the No.66 has taken on a more prominent leadership role with the group in Kirkby.

He was at his assured best in L4 as he led by example, recording his 10th assist in total across 2023, becoming only the third player to do so in the Premier League so far.

Alexander-Arnold has now made it into double figures in the assist column in a calendar year on three separate occasions to date.

Szoboszlai opens Reds account

The midfielder put an exclamation point on his strong start to the season for Liverpool.

The No.8 struck his first Reds goal in style at Anfield, darting onto a loose ball on the edge of the area to fire into the bottom corner at the first time of asking.

With the goal, Szoboszlai became the first Hungarian to score for Liverpool, and only the fourth in the history of the Premier League.

Salah brings 150 up

The Egyptian King has now scored in 150 separate games for Liverpool.

Salah struck his seventh goal in his last eight outings against Villa to bring up the record, as he ghosted in at the back post to fire home Nunez's flicked header from a corner.

He has now also scored in 10 of his last 11 Premier League home games at Anfield, with his last blank coming against Villa in May.

Relentless Reds remain unbeaten

The foundations for the 2023-24 campaign have been laid heading into the September international break.

Liverpool's Premier League record stands at three wins, one draw and no losses to open up the new term.

Dating back to last season, the Reds' run of 15 top-flight games unbeaten is the longest current run without defeat in the division.

Klopp's charges will be hoping to pick up where they left off when they travel to face Wolverhampton Wanderers on September 16.
