Reaction'Special, but we have to keep calm' - Salah and Szoboszlai on Etihad victory
Mohamed Salah and Dominik Szoboszlai reflected on a ‘special’ evening as Liverpool beat Manchester City 2-0 to go 11 points clear at the top of the Premier League.
The Reds increased their margin to second-placed Arsenal by triumphing at Etihad Stadium, where Salah and Szoboszlai each assisted the other for goals during the first half.
Post-match, they both offered their reaction to the result, speaking to Sky Sports. Read a summary below…
Salah
On a significant day and weekend, and how big a result this is…
It’s incredible. It’s a very hard place to come and play here. Tough team, they have an incredible manager. They dominate the game, I think they can win any game here. But I’m glad in the end we managed to win the game.
On what it means to win at City…
It’s special, to be fair, especially when you’re running in the title race. It’s incredible. They have won four [league titles] in a row now, it’s an incredible team. Hopefully we just keep calm because sometimes the pressure at the end can get into us, so hopefully we just keep calm and just play our game and try to win each game.
On whether he is playing better than ever…
I don’t know, it’s an opinion. Maybe people prefer my first season [at Liverpool] [or] people prefer now. I prefer now because [leading] the league, doing your best and helping the team – helping the younger players as well – it’s incredible.
On if he ‘needs’ another title and whether it feels close now…
I wouldn’t say it feels close. We need another title for sure, me and the big guys here in the team. We need another title. But we’ll give it our best, we’ll give it a good shot and we’ll see.
Szoboszlai
On his and Curtis Jones’ roles on the evening…
That was the plan, we played with two 10s. As Mo said, they managed the game almost 90 per cent but at the end the result is for us and we are happy to take the three points home.
On whether Liverpool felt ‘in control’ despite City having more possession…
We were defending probably 30 metres from our goal but we just gave everything. We knew that was going to happen and it’s part of the game. Sometimes you don’t always have the ball, especially against City away. But as I said, happy to take the three points.
On the importance of the players staying calm now…
We have to keep going, it’s going to be a tough game against Newcastle [on Wednesday]. 11 more games to go. It never ends so we have to keep calm, we have to keep going, take it game by game and at the end hopefully we’re going to be on the top.
