Analysis'The skipper was magnificent, he really was'
During his regular post-match Review Show, which is now available to watch on LFCTV GO, Mellor analysed how the Reds recorded a ninth successive victory at Anfield in all competitions this season.
“The skipper was magnificent, he really was,” the former Liverpool striker said of Van Dijk’s display.
“Virgil made one goal-saving clearance and his desire to keep a clean sheet was just brilliant.
“Virgil dominated his penalty area and he was top of the pile in all categories in the match stats, for aerial duels, tackles, clearances, accurate passes. The skipper was just brilliant.”
Mellor also hailed the contributions of Nunez and Kostas Tsimikas, who supplied one and two assists respectively during the victory as Mohamed Salah (two) and Diogo Jota netted.
“Darwin Nunez got an assist, had two goals disallowed and ran more than anyone else on the field, what a contribution,” he added.
“It was a proper centre-forward’s performance and he has such a great link-up with Mo Salah. Darwin got a well-deserved hug from his manager at the end of the game.
“I also want to highlight Kostas Tsimikas, who put in a really good performance and showed a great reaction after midweek.
“I’m really pleased for Kostas, he got two assists and gave us great width down that left side and good energy.”
