NewsRyan Babel announces retirement from football
Babel made 146 appearances and scored 22 goals during a three-and-a-half-year stay on Merseyside between July 2007 and January 2011, when he left for Hoffenheim.
A pacy forward who mainly operated off the left flank, Babel – who was capped on 69 occasions by the Netherlands – joined the Reds from hometown club Ajax at the age of 20.
His catalogue of goals for Liverpool featured memorable Champions League strikes against Arsenal and Olympique Lyonnais, and a dramatic Kop-end winner versus Manchester United in the Premier League in the 2008-09 season.
Babel was part of the Dutch squad that finished as runners-up at the 2010 World Cup and would go on to represent clubs including Besiktas, Fulham and Galatasaray – as well as spending two further spells with Ajax – after departing Anfield.
Now, aged 37, he has decided to call time on his playing career and, in a post on social media, wrote: "As I look back on my career it feels surreal to think about how far I have come. From my early days at Ajax to playing for some of the biggest clubs in Europe, it's been a journey full of unforgettable moments.
"I've been fortunate enough to play with and against some of the best players in the world and I have learned and grown in ways I never imagined.
"Football has been more than just a job, it's been a way of life: the discipline, the sacrifice, the passion, the glory and even the pain have all played a part in my development both on and off the field.
"I am filled with gratitude for this amazing journey I have had. Football gave me everything I dreamed of and so much more. Thank you to all my teammates, coaches, fans and even the media who have been part of this incredible adventure. This game will forever be in my heart. Thank you."
Everyone at Liverpool FC wishes Ryan all the best for the future.
