The Liverpool FC Women midfielder played the whole of the contest in Santo Domingo overnight, with Reds teammate Eva Spencer an unused substitute.
Strikes by Alba Cerrato and Pau Comendador either side of half-time put Spain on the cusp of reaching the final, and deep into stoppage time an effort deflected off the unfortunate Shaw and into her own net.
England will now meet the USA in Sunday’s third-place play-off (6.30pm GMT) as they seek to achieve their highest ever finish at the tournament.
