MatchPSV Eindhoven v Liverpool: Champions League team news
Cody Gakpo and Andy Robertson are the only starters from the weekend victory over Ipswich Town to have made the trip to the Netherlands for matchday eight.
A host of youngsters are part of the Reds' 21-strong travelling squad, which also carries the experience of Wataru Endo, Darwin Nunez, Federico Chiesa, Harvey Elliott, Kostas Tsimikas, Caoimhin Kelleher, Jarell Quansah and Conor Bradley.
Arne Slot's men are guaranteed a place in the last 16 and will finish no lower than second in the league-phase standings.
On his squad selection, the head coach explained at a press conference on Tuesday evening: "All the ones that are left behind could have played tomorrow.
"But for the long term – so, it doesn't tell you anything about the short term, doesn't tell us anything about Saturday's game – but for the long term, if you look back at our season, it has been almost every time after three or four or five weeks we gave them the break during the week when there was a League Cup or an FA Cup [game].
"If there was a moment for them to get some freshness back we have always done that."
Slot continued: "A very wise man once said to me, 'I have never seen anything good coming from losing a football game' so we are not going into the game tomorrow trying to lose the game, we will do everything we can to try to win it, of course.
"The second thing is that because we mainly start with 13 or 14 players that have shared most of the playing time, the ones that haven't played a lot it's very useful for them to have 90 minutes. Because if we do get into injury problems, these players will have a bit of game rhythm then as well.
"So, it's a choice that we've made for the long term. It doesn't tell you anything about the results in the short term but definitely it helps us for the long term."
PSV, who are highly likely to progress to the knockout play-offs, will be without three players that started their league victory over NAC Breda on Saturday.
Ryan Flamingo was sent off in their most recent European outing and is serving a suspension as a result, while Ivan Perisic joined Peter Bosz's team in the middle of September but missed the registration period for the Champions League.
Jerdy Schouten joins Sergino Dest, Malick Tillman and Couhaib Driouech as those ruled out with fitness concerns.
The Eredivisie champions will continue to monitor Adamo Nagalo (shoulder) and Noa Lang (illness).
Asked for an update on Tuesday, Bosz said: "I don't know yet. I sat with Noa Lang this morning, he's not fresh yet. If the training goes well, Adamo Nagalo could be in the selection again tomorrow.
"Jerdy Schouten won't be playing in the back tomorrow because he's not going to play at all.
"Armando Obispo was also sick in Belgrade. He did play for a few minutes then but that was the maximum. Now he's back."
