The Liverpool FC Women squad made their annual Christmas visit to Alder Hey Children’s Hospital on Friday afternoon.

Matt Beard and his players took the short journey from their base at the AXA Melwood Training Centre to the children’s hospital in West Derby.

The Reds, who were also joined by club mascot Mighty Red, spread some festive cheer around the wards of the facility and shared gifts with the young patients to mark the Christmas period.

“Obviously all the families and the kids here are going through difficulties, so it’s nice to come in and spread some Christmas spirit and have some nice goodies to give them at the end,” said captain Niamh Fahey.

“It’s only little what we can do but it obviously can be a big thing to people. It’s a special day getting to come here to Alder Hey. Liverpool is a city that reaches out and gives, it has a community feel.

“All the players are more than happy to spend an hour to say hi and chat to people.”

Beard added: “It’s very humbling coming here. You come here and see what some people are going through, it just puts life into perspective.

“The impact it can have on the children and on the parents; this hospital and the staff that work here deserve an enormous amount of credit. It’s an unbelievable place.”
