Sam, welcome to Liverpool. How delighted are you to have made the loan move here?
I’m really excited for my time here. I spoke to Matt and obviously the club before I came, and I love their ambitions. I’m really excited to get started.
It has been quite a journey for you over the last few years, including multiple titles in Scotland and then the move to Bayern Munich…
I feel like my career in the last few years has really changed a lot. I obviously moved to Germany and that was a challenge itself, being in that intense environment with such world-class players has been really good for my development. And obviously I’ve grown into the role with the national team, which has been really good. I’m hoping to bring my experience and the things I’ve learned over the last couple of years to Liverpool in this loan move.
And do you feel like it’s a good time for you to take on more of a leadership role in the squad and help players around you?
Yeah, at Scotland I’ve taken on more of a leadership role there and I’ve really grown into the role. I’m still continuing to develop that too. In terms of club level, I’m really looking forward to being here at Liverpool and bringing my experience, really taking that challenge and hopefully helping the team get the results needed and get further up the table.
Matt Beard is obviously a big admirer of your talents, and this move potentially could have happened before…
Yeah, I spoke to Matt a couple of years ago and I was actually really impressed with the club and all their ambitions and everything they put forward to me. Obviously at that time it didn’t quite work out, but I spoke to him again and so much has progressed here since. I’m really excited. This is the perfect place for me right now.
It’ll be your first spell in the WSL, at a really exciting time for the league. What qualities do you think you can bring?
Firstly, the WSL is the most competitive league. People dream to play here. So, I’m so excited to be involved in that. For me as a player, what I think I can bring to the team is some leadership qualities, a lot of energy – it’s hard to talk about yourself as a player, but bring that energy and passion to Liverpool and bring it on the pitch in every game and every training session.
You’ve already got someone here you know, with Jenna Clark being a Scotland international teammate. What did she say to you ahead of this move?
I spoke to Jenna beforehand and she really encouraged me to come here. She said that I’d really fit in with the girls here. Culture and the team environment is big for me, and speaking to Jenna she said that the culture here and the team environment and all the players are so nice. When I came in, I saw that for myself. That was a huge part for me and one of the main reasons that I thought it’s good to come here. So, thanks Jenna!
It’s a loan move until the end of the season, so settling in quickly is paramount for you being able to help the team on the pitch…
Yeah, it’s a quick turnaround. I came here a couple of days ago and this weekend we have a cup game, so you have to fit in fast and train hard and get to know how you’re going to play and everything. I’m really looking forward to the challenge and let’s go.
Do you set yourself any targets for the rest of the season? Or is it taking it one game at a time and trying to get into the side?
Firstly, I want to fit in to the club, the environment and their style of play. Training every day will help me do that, fit into the environment of the girls, the style of play and what Matt wants from me. That’s the goal daily. For the games, take it each game at a time and hopefully I can perform for Liverpool, give my all to the team and we get the results that we want.
