News'People sing it while going past my house!' - Arne Slot reacts to Jürgen Klopp's welcome chant
Slot was welcomed to the club during Klopp’s farewell speech at Anfield on the final day of last season, when his predecessor led supporters in an impromptu rendition of Slot’s name being sung.
On Wednesday, Slot conducted his first interview as the Reds’ new head coach and was shown a clip of Klopp’s gesture.
“I do think that I know what you are going to show me now!” the Dutchman said, with a knowing smile.
“Just after it happened I got a lot of text messages from people who saw this and who were sending it to me. Yeah, I think this is probably one of the reasons why he is so popular over here, because of course he won the trophies but to do this for your successor.
“I don’t think it has ever happened before that the fans, let alone the former manager, are singing your name before you have even arrived.
“So, I think this says the most about him and I am hoping, hoping, that then fans will sing in the upcoming season again – maybe not my name but a little bit more for the players. But sometimes when I am in Zwolle now, where I live, people pass my house and are singing this song!
“So, it did have an impact already!”
