Reaction'Patience was key' - Origi and Robertson on Merseyside derby victory
Jürgen Klopp’s side earned all three points in the Premier League encounter at Anfield thanks to second-half headers from Robertson and Origi.
The two goalscorers spoke to Sky Sports post-match. Read on for a transcript…
Robertson
On the victory at Anfield…
First half, we weren’t at our best. We kind of started playing their game instead of our own game. There was a lot of breakages in play. There was probably too many people coming together, things like that.
Look, I’ve been in a relegation battle and I know what it’s like. We had to focus on our own game, play football, be patient, create chances and luckily [we] managed it. I think [in the] second half we controlled the game a lot better.
On patience being important…
Patience was key. Obviously, they knew going into the game they were in the bottom three. It changes things. They’re fighting for every point they can get, so we knew it was going to be competitive.
We didn’t really create anything in the first half. We didn’t do what we wanted to do. Luckily in the second half we [were] a bit more patient and we popped up with goals.
On his goal and vital clearance in the second half…
I think Dele [Alli] did well to get to the byline but when you go there, there is only so much you can do. I thought he was going to cut it back so, just right place, right time to get a foot on it and clear it.
Back-post headers are rare! [It’s] my first goal at the Kop end, so it was an amazing feeling. [I’m] delighted with all of our contributions today. It’s been a big week and we’ve come through it unscathed. Now we’ve got another huge week coming up.
Origi
On scoring six goals in games against Everton…
It is a nice record. When I go on the pitch, I just think about making plays and playing football. Today we needed it. It was a tough game; we knew it was going to be tough for the last games. Eventually we got the three points, so that’s the most important thing.
On whether his touch to Mohamed Salah in the build-up to the opening goal was his first…
I think so, yeah, it was. It was a good cross and then Robbo did a nice finish. It was needed.
On whether there was relief after the victory…
No, I would say we worked hard to get the three points. For us, it’s focus. We know now all the games are tough. They always are, but especially now. We just try to play the game. In the end, we worked for the three points.
It’s a good feeling because [we have] good momentum, but we know we still have a lot of games to come, so it’s back to focus [and] looking forward to the next games.
