MatchThe opposition lowdown: Ipswich Town

Recent form

Ipswich head to Merseyside having won one, drawn one and lost three of their last five top-flight fixtures.

Kieran McKenna's outfit currently sit 18th in the standings, inside the relegation zone on goal difference, after gathering 16 points from their 22 games this season.

Their last league victory came in late December in impressive fashion against Chelsea at Portman Road, as they secured a 2-0 home win.

Key men

Liam Delap is Ipswich's leading goalscorer in the Premier League this term. The striker has netted eight times so far, alongside recording two assists for his team.

Sammie Szmodics has found the back of the net on four occasions, while wide man Jack Clarke and defender Leif Davis each have two assists to their name.

Team news

Julio Enciso is ready for selection after signing for the Tractor Boys on loan from Brighton & Hove Albion.

Axel Tuanzebe is available once more, though Conor Chaplin and Szmodics are sidelined due to injury.

Chiedozie Ogbene is also in the treatment room having already been ruled out for the remainder of the season.

Previous meeting

Liverpool travelled to Ipswich on the opening day of the 2024-25 season.

It was the first competitive game under Arne Slot's watch after his summer arrival, and the Reds prevailed in Suffolk.

Goals from Diogo Jota and Mohamed Salah – both coming in the second half – handed the visitors all three points to kick off the campaign.

What was said

Ipswich head coach McKenna on Liverpool

"They've been an enjoyable watch and in some ways also to watch how the team has developed, because they were very good in pre-season.

"I think even in pre-season before we played them first time round you could see that he'd really managed to get his imprint on the team very, very, very quickly.

"They've carried that right the way through the season, really, and I think probably the biggest observation you could make is that they're a really, really complete team.

"They defend well and they can press high, they defend in the block well, they have discipline in their defensive shape, their counter-press is good, their counter-attacks are good, they have a real threat with attacking transitions.

"They can both control the game with possession, but they can also change gears really, really quickly and go to hurt the opposition with a variety of threats.

"They can go in behind, they can pass through you, they can go around the outside and go one-v-one, they can cross it and they can shoot from outside.

"There are other teams who can do this, but they have a really good balance for it. I think they're well coached and have good structure and principles in all phases.

"They have a very good squad and a deep squad, so they can rotate as well and it's clear to see why they're having a very good season."

Pre-match stats

Ipswich have won two of their last five Premier League away games (one draw, two defeats), having gone winless in their previous 12 top-flight matches on the road.

Davis is the only player to have created 20-plus chances from both open play (21) and set-plays (20) in the Premier League this season.

Delap's eight goals in the league this season have been split equally between right foot (four) and left foot (four).

Only Crystal Palace (59 per cent) have earned a higher proportion of their Premier League points this season in away games than Ipswich (56 per cent – nine of 16).

Opposition view

Stuart Watson, chief football writer at the East Anglian Daily Times

"Back-to-back promotions ended a 22-year absence from the Premier League for Ipswich Town – it was always going to be tough to compete after such a rapid rise, even with a £100m+ summer spend.

"All things considered, it's gone as well as anyone could have hoped for, I'd say. Ipswich have been highly competitive in the large majority of games. Wins against Tottenham and Chelsea have been the highlight. When you look back at some of the late goals conceded against Brentford, Leicester, Bournemouth and Fulham, there's definitely a feeling that the points tally could easily be higher.

"Last Sunday's 6-0 thrashing at the hands of Manchester City was a reminder of the scale of the task. It's looking like it might be a straight fight between Ipswich and Wolves to beat the drop."

Predicted line-up

"It will almost certainly be a continuation of a 3-4-2-1 system that becomes a 5-4-1 deep block out of possession."

Walton; Tuanzebe, O'Shea, Greaves; Godfrey, Morsy, Cajuste, Davis; Hutchinson, Philogene; Delap.
