AcademyU21s match report: Nyoni and Gordon goals see Liverpool beat Newcastle in Premier League 2
Trey Nyoni and Kaide Gordon were on the mark for Barry Lewtas' side at Whitley Park.
The young Reds made a bright start and took the lead after just three minutes. Jayden Danns pressed to win the ball and found Nyoni, who netted with a cool finish.
Gordon then doubled the advantage from the penalty spot on 21 minutes after Danns was brought down in the box.
Although Ben Parkinson pulled a goal back a minute later for the hosts, the young Reds claimed all three points.
Reflecting on the win, U21s head coach Lewtas told Liverpoolfc.com: "Newcastle are a well-organised side but we did well and I was really pleased with the win.
"Our opening goal came from a really good press from Jayden, who won the ball and passed it to Trey, so that was really pleasing.
"Jayden then won the penalty and Kaide took it, and netted what was our first penalty of the season.
"It was a shame to then concede straight away but, to be fair, as the game went on we were a real threat in behind, especially on the break through midfield. It was a good win for us.
"I've got to give our goalkeeper Oscar Kelly a mention because he was brilliant.
"Oscar made an unbelievable save in the first half right on half-time, which would have made it 2-2, and he also made a great save right at the end of the game."
