Kop 10Newcastle repeat, opening days, Salah treble and more - Liverpool's 4-3 Premier League wins
The win, secured courtesy of Trent Alexander-Arnold’s 88th-minute strike, was the 10th time they have clinched a Premier League game by a 4-3 scoreline, with six of those coming during the reign of Jürgen Klopp.
Here, we take a look back at each of those epic contests…
Liverpool 4-3 Newcastle United, April 1996
Widely considered to be one of the Premier League’s greatest ever games, Liverpool secured a memorable victory over title-chasing Newcastle United thanks to Stan Collymore’s stoppage-time strike.
In a see-saw contest, the Reds led early through Robbie Fowler, only for the Magpies to hit back quickly via Les Ferdinand and David Ginola.
Fowler levelled after half-time but Faustino Asprilla immediately restored the lead for a Newcastle team managed by Kevin Keegan.
The hosts were not done, though. Collymore converted Jason McAteer’s cross to make it 3-3, and he would have the final word when collecting John Barnes’ pass to drill home a winner at the Kop end.
Liverpool 4-3 Newcastle United, March 1997
Lightning struck twice the following season, as Liverpool and Newcastle produced a repeat of their 1996 epic.
The Reds looked in full control as they raced into a 3-0 lead before half-time, with Steve McManaman, Patrik Berger and Fowler all on target.
But Newcastle staged a remarkable late comeback – Keith Gillespie and Asprilla netted before Warren Barton squeezed in an equaliser.
Liverpool, however, had the last say again, this time with Fowler heading home Stig Inge Bjornebye’s cross to secure another remarkable win in the final seconds.
Liverpool 4-3 Blackburn Rovers, May 2002
The penultimate game of the 2001-02 campaign saw the Reds record an entertaining victory over Blackburn Rovers at Anfield, despite throwing away the lead on three separate occasions.
Liverpool went ahead thanks to Danny Murphy’s strike, but Damien Duff levelled within five minutes.
Nicolas Anelka’s goal was then cancelled out by Andrew Cole’s effort, though Sami Hyypia swiftly restored the home team’s advantage.
Blackburn equalised for a third time through Matt Jansen, 10 minutes from time, but Gerard Houllier’s men still won it as Emile Heskey fired home in the 85th minute, with Jamie Carragher claiming the assist.
Liverpool 4-3 Swansea City, February 2014
The second half of the 2013-14 season saw Brendan Rodgers’ Reds embark on an exhilarating 11-game winning streak in the Premier League.
The third match in that sequence was a wild victory over Swansea City at Anfield, in which both Daniel Sturridge and Jordan Henderson struck twice.
Sturridge gave Liverpool an early lead, with Henderson adding a spectacular second soon after. But Jonjo Shelvey’s brilliant strike reduced the deficit for Swansea, before Martin Skrtel’s own goal made it 2-2.
Sturridge headed home to restore the Reds’ advantage before half-time, but Wilfried Bony converted a penalty just after the break to equalise once more. Henderson’s second of the afternoon finally settled the game 16 minutes from time.
Arsenal 3-4 Liverpool, August 2016
The only away win on this list came on the opening weekend of the 2016-17 campaign, at Emirates Stadium.
In an epic clash, Theo Walcott, who had earlier seen a penalty saved by Simon Mignolet, opened the scoring, only to see Philippe Coutinho’s incredible free-kick level the game on the stroke of half-time.
Liverpool took control after the break, with Adam Lallana and Coutinho scoring before Sadio Mane marked his Reds debut with a wonderful solo fourth goal.
Arsenal then fought back, future Reds midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain netting and Calum Chambers heading home to set up a nervy finish that the visitors nevertheless saw out.
Liverpool 4-3 Manchester City, January 2018
Another memorable game at Anfield, as Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City suffered their first league defeat of the campaign en route to the Premier League title.
In front of a raucous crowd, Oxlade-Chamberlain slammed Liverpool into an early lead, only for Leroy Sane to level before half-time.
After the break, Roberto Firmino dinked the Reds back in front before Mane lashed in a third and Mohamed Salah then lobbed Ederson from 45 yards to make it 4-1.
City rallied late, Bernardo Silva and Ilkay Gundogan finding the target to ensure a tense finale, but Klopp’s side held on.
Liverpool 4-3 Crystal Palace, January 2019
A game in which Liverpool had to dig deep to keep their Premier League title challenge on track.
The Reds trailed at half-time as Andros Townsend put Palace ahead, but stormed back after the break with Salah and Firmino both netting.
James Tomkins’ header made it 2-2, but Salah grabbed his second of the afternoon following a Julian Speroni mistake, and Mane wrapped up the points in the third minute of stoppage time. Max Meyer’s even later strike made it 4-3 at full-time.
Liverpool 4-3 Leeds United, September 2020
Another opening-day game, albeit this one played behind closed doors due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Salah was the hero for Liverpool with a hat-trick, but the Reds had to battle hard to get the win, losing the lead three times against newly promoted Leeds United.
Salah’s fifth-minute penalty set the ball rolling but Jack Harrison levelled swiftly. After Virgil van Dijk headed home, Leeds responded again through Patrick Bamford, and Salah’s thunderous second made it 3-2 at the interval.
Mateusz Klich drew Marcelo Bielsa’s side level again after the break, but Salah held his nerve to convert his second spot-kick of the afternoon and secure the points, two minutes from time.
Liverpool 4-3 Tottenham Hotspur, April 2023
Diogo Jota’s late goal secured a memorable win over Tottenham Hotspur towards the back end of the 2022-23 campaign.
Liverpool looked to be cruising as they raced into a 3-0 lead inside 15 minutes, with Curtis Jones, Luis Diaz and Salah all scoring.
But Harry Kane pulled a goal back before half-time, and then Son Heung-min further reduced the deficit 13 minutes before the end.
In stoppage time, Richarlison scrambled an equaliser, but within seconds Jota seized on a loose pass from Lucas Moura to drive in a low shot and settle another remarkable Anfield contest.
Liverpool 4-3 Fulham, December 2023
Liverpool summoned another 2023-24 comeback with a late, late rally against Fulham, as Alexander-Arnold’s 88th-minute winner secured a magnificent victory for Klopp’s team.
The Reds twice led in the first half, Bernd Leno inadvertently deflecting Alexander-Arnold’s sublime free-kick into his own net before Alexis Mac Allister scored with a 25-yard screamer.
Harry Wilson and Kenny Tete levelled each time for Fulham, who then took the lead 10 minutes from the end when substitute Bobby De Cordova-Reid headed home.
But another sub, Wataru Endo, drew Liverpool level with a precise 20-yarder, before Alexander-Arnold drilled in the winner seconds later, sparking wild scenes of celebration on the pitch and in the stands.
