Feature'Mum, is this you?!' - the story behind a treasured LFC photograph
‘Mum, is this you?!’ it read.
It was. The picture showed two young women at the 1973 UEFA Cup final second leg between Liverpool and hosts Borussia Monchengladbach.
The pair of Kopites were Linda and her friend Marion, accompanied by a blow-up doll wearing a full Reds strip.
And almost 50 years after its capture, the image was being affectionately shared on social media.
It’s a story that is recounted by Clark in Shankly’s Second Coming, a brand-new LFC Original documentary available to watch on LFCTV GO now.
“My daughter said, ‘Mum, you’re famous, it’s on Twitter!’” she remembers. “I thought, ‘Oh my!’
“It was a great occasion to be there for the first [European trophy for Liverpool].
“Marion was a lovely girl. We used to work together and we became great friends. We went on holiday together – Spain, Benidorm, Torremolinos, everywhere. She’d come to home matches with me, and when we had the opportunity to go to Germany, she was over the moon.”
Marion, sadly, passed away some years ago, while Linda stopped going to Anfield regularly after marrying in 1976. “He’s an Evertonian,” she smiles.
The photo of the pair in Gladbach, however, lives on.
“We were drenched at the time,” Linda says. “But this blow-up doll, everyone has asked me who it is. It’s Alec Lindsay! He’s got the No.3 shirt on.
“The Liverpool tea towel was my mum’s, her pride and joy. She never, ever used it to dry a dish. It was only ever brought out on special occasions!”
She adds: “It’s treasured, really, and the photo means the world to me. I have it framed in my front room on the wall, and it’s going to stay there.
“And if anything happens to me, my daughter is going to have it and she’ll have it up in her house as well. It’ll last forever.”
