Salah netted twice in the opening half of the contest at Amex Stadium to overturn Simon Adingra’s earlier opener.

But home captain Lewis Dunk ensured the points would be shared on the south coast, converting a Solly March free-kick 12 minutes from time to make the game all square.

Darwin Nunez returned to Liverpool’s attack, with the Uruguayan one of three changes made by the Reds from their last Premier League outing at Tottenham Hotspur.

Elsewhere, Trent Alexander-Arnold was restored in defence and Harvey Elliott was chosen in midfield.

First half

The game began at a frantic pace on the south coast, with both teams exchanging attacks in the opening minutes.

For the hosts, March and Joao Pedro both saw efforts blocked from inside the area, before Adingra opened the scoring on 20 minutes, stealing the ball high up the pitch to finish past Alisson Becker.

Liverpool attempted to respond to the opening goal, but it was again Brighton who threatened on the counter-attack, with Carlos Baleba shooting wide from the edge of the area.

Salah, though, levelled the contest five minutes ahead of the interval, as the Reds put together a slick passing move, which ended with Luis Diaz and Nunez combining to allow the No.11 to sweep home from inside the box after an Elliott dummy.

It was to get better for Liverpool as the clock ticked into added time at the end of the first half. With the visitors pressing high up the pitch, Dominik Szoboszlai was found by Nunez and taken down by Pascal Gross as he advanced goalwards, with Salah converting the resulting penalty to earn the advantage at the break.

Second half

After the change of ends, Brighton started on the front foot, with Alisson called into action to make a vital save from Adingra inside the box.

Evan Ferguson then shot wide of the goal from distance, while half-time substitute Ryan Gravenberch struck the bar for the Reds from close range as Szoboszlai’s ball across the face of goal was met by the midfielder.

The No.38 was again denied a short while later, this time by Bart Verbruggen in the home net, with the goalkeeper saving a shot low down to his left.

Diaz then shot past the post from the left flank and in the opposite box Brighton saw appeals for a penalty for handball waved away by referee Anthony Taylor.

With 12 minutes remaining, Brighton levelled the game once more, with Dunk placing a March free-kick from the left into the corner of the goal as a dipping delivery was met by the defender.

Pedro went closest in the latter stages, shooting over the bar from a low cutback, though the teams were unable to be separated and claimed a point apiece.
