NewsMo Salah: I'd love to be taking a post-match selfie with Virgil!

The No.11 has hit the target 32 times in all competitions across a remarkable personal 2024-25 campaign to date.

And Salah has made a frequent habit of marking his goals by uploading a picture to social media of himself alongside any teammates who have also netted in the same game.

Naturally, he would love for circumstances to allow him to be doing so again this Sunday afternoon, when the Reds stride out at Wembley aiming to successfully defend the Carabao Cup as they face Newcastle United in the final.

In a pre-match preview filmed with Sky Sports, Salah was asked who he would most like to be taking his trademark image with after full-time if Arne Slot’s side are triumphant.

“I would say Virg… [Virgil van Dijk],” he replied. “Robbo [Andy Robertson] doesn’t score much! Alisson [Becker] is really tricky!

“I always love to see Dominik [Szoboszlai] but I would say Virgil. Hopefully one day [for Robertson].”

The Egyptian continued: “I just did it after three or four games and just kept going. I asked someone in the media at the club, he is very close to me and he told me it’s a good idea so just try it, and it’s working well.”

On the theme of ‘final’, Salah was also quizzed about who will be the last person he speaks to on the day before locking in focus for the showpiece against the Magpies.

“I would say my mum. I call her on the phone all the time,” he said.

“Since I started my career, I call her every day before a game, on the way to the stadium. I always call her. She just sends me a prayer and wishes me good luck.”
