Reds in talks with Roma for Mohamed Salah

The Egyptian winger was one of a number of attacking options under consideration by Jurgen Klopp this summer, as he seeks to bolster his squad in the wide areas.

The 24-year-old has now emerged as one of the club's top targets, and the ECHO understands negotiations are ongoing between the two clubs with the Reds keen to land their man.

The forward's agent, Ramy Abbas, flew to England on Tuesday – although it is unknown whether it was connected to the deal.

Salah - who turned down a move to Anfield in 2014, opting to join Chelsea instead – would likely cause the club to break their current transfer record of £35million for Andy Carroll.

That ceiling could be smashed a number of times over the next few months, with prime targets Virgil van Dijk and Naby Keita both valued at £50million at least.

The Reds have been encouraged by initial soundings from Van Dijk's camp, and are willing to pay big in order to bring him to Anfield, as well as making him one of the club's top earners.

Competition is fierce, with reports this week suggesting Manchester City were preparing to offer Van Dijk a £180,000-a-week contract to try to tempt him to the Etihad. Chelsea and Arsenal are also keen.

Liverpool, though, believe Van Dijk's decision will not come down to money. They are prepared to compete with both City and Chelsea in terms of fee and wages, and remain hopeful that the Netherlands international will choose a move to Anfield.

Keita, who helped steer RB Leipzig to a surprise runners-up spot in the Bundesliga, has impressed Klopp throughout his debut campaign and is the German boss' first choice to boost his midfield options.
