Reaction'Means a lot' - Trent on Shield win, Nunez impact and more
The Reds lifted the trophy for the first time in 16 years on Saturday as goals from Alexander-Arnold, Mohamed Salah (penalty) and Darwin Nunez defeated Manchester City 3-1 at King Power Stadium.
Post-match, the No.66 spoke to ITV about how much it meant to the team to succeed in the curtain-raiser, the impact Nunez made off the bench, and more…
On the emotions of the occasion and winning the Community Shield for the first time…
Yeah, this one means a lot, to be honest. It’s the third time we’ve been in it and we haven’t been able to win it so far. So that was kind of our motivation going into it. We’ve prepared hard this pre-season, this was our aim. Our season started today. A lot of teams, it starts next week when the league starts, but ours started today. It was important for us to get off on the right foot, get a win and especially get some silverware on board.
On scoring the opening goal…
It was on target, that’s all I’ll say! I just tried to make a good connection, tried to steer it towards goal. It took a deflection – it wasn’t too big – but I’m always happy to contribute to goals and it was an important one for us as well.
On how highly he rated Nunez’s debut…
Yeah, it’s got to be up there – won the pen, scored a goal and had a one-on-one. He looks lively, very lively. He’s someone who has been brought in to score goals, that kind of player for us, and he’s proven he can do that today.
On what Nunez will add to Liverpool…
A top player. A young player who you can tell is willing to learn. He has bonded well with the lads, everyone has got on well with him. He has come in, got his head down, worked hard so far and knows his position is not just going to be there because we bought him this summer, he’s got to earn it. He came on today with a point to prove and he scored us the goal to clinch it and obviously won the pen for us as well.
On his confidence of competing with City for the league title this season…
Who knows what will happen over the course of the season? All we can do is prepare as well as we have this pre-season. Our aim is to be as fit as possible, to be able to push from the first kick of the season until the very last, like we did last year, and hopefully win many trophies along the way. For us it was a perfect start but it’s a long season and we hope to win trophies along the way.
