ColumnMatt Beard on Spurs draw, centurion Lawley, Parry progress and FA Cup

I was pleased with the character shown by the players against Tottenham and we will definitely take the point as a positive.

If you can’t win the game then you’ve got to make sure that you take the point. Conditions were tough for both sides with the wind and the pitch wasn’t to its usual standard either, so that made it difficult.

I felt we were in control of the second half and then we got that sucker blow – it was a freak goal. But then we responded well afterwards and Rachael Laws made two big saves for us.

We kept going right to the end and Melissa Lawley, on her 100th appearance for the club, created something out of nothing with the assist.

I’ve said it time and time again, when Mel is on it she is on it! There’s no-one better.

She did really well to chase the ball down and it was a great finish from Marie Höbinger. I was pleased for Herby and that will get her confidence going again.

You have to remember she has played a lot of football this year at the most intense level she has played at – from a consistency point of view, from training to games. Obviously she has been playing in the international programme as well.

The goal will give her that big lift and hopefully get her back to where she was for us.

Lucy Parry was excellent when she came on and she is knocking right on the door, pushing Emma Koivisto for the right-back slot. She is consistently doing it in training and I thought going forward she was fantastic.

It’s great to see how well Pazza is progressing. Last season she left home for the first time and went on loan to Hibernian and has now come back.

She is a great character as well and it’s great to see her coming out of her shell, which is enabling her to express herself on the pitch. She is pushing Emma all the way now.

We now turn our attention to the Adobe Women’s FA Cup fifth round with a trip to London City Lionesses on Sunday (kick-off 2pm GMT at Princes Park).

We had some tough games against them in the FA Women’s Championship and Dartford is a tough place to go and play because it’s a tight pitch. It’s going to be an interesting game.

Obviously they are struggling in the league for whatever reason but they’ve got a lot of experienced players in their team – including Megan Campbell, who we know well and has just signed for them from Everton. Meg is cup-tied for this game.

They also have our former player Jade Bailey, who has just gone there, and have experience in Emma Mukandi, Ruesha Littlejohn, Danielle Carter and goalkeeper Grace Moloney.

In these types of cup games, form does go out of the window. It’s going to be an interesting game as they do have an experienced squad full of WSL players.

As I’ve said all along, we want to do well in cup competitions this year.

With the strength and depth we’ve got in the squad this season, we utilised the Continental League Cup to keep everyone fit and sharp. But with the FA Cup, we are treating it the same as the league.

Hopefully we will be in the hat for the next round come Sunday night and, as ever, we will be giving it everything we have got. The FA Cup is still, in my opinion, the greatest cup competition in women’s football.

As always, thank you for your continued support.

YNWA,

Matt
