Premier LeagueLiverpool v Tottenham Hotspur: Team news
The Reds captain was mentioned as a doubt for Sunday’s game having not trained fully this week, with Jürgen Klopp revealing the Netherlands international was hoping to resume partial training on Friday.
“Virgil wasn’t [in team training] the whole week yet,” Klopp told his pre-match press conference on Friday. “[He will] probably [be in] part of parts of team training today. So we have to see what we can do there.”
Liverpool can, however, welcome back Conor Bradley, who is fit again after an issue and has trained fully this week.
But Diogo Jota is yet to resume team training after sustaining an injury at Fulham last month and is set to miss the 4.30pm BST kick-off at Anfield. Joel Matip, Thiago Alcantara and Ben Doak also remain sidelined.
Klopp, who will lead the Reds at Anfield for the penultimate time before his departure as manager, said of the visitors: “You can always see a clear footballing idea and that’s what they still kept.
“We will have to be prepared for that, we have to defend really compact, if you don’t do that then they’ll play through because the idea is really obvious and they work now together nearly a year.”
Tottenham, meanwhile, will definitely be without Ben Davies (calf), Timo Werner (hamstring), Destiny Udogie (thigh), Manor Solomon (knee), Fraser Forster (foot) and Ryan Sessegnon (hamstring) for their trip to Merseyside.
Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou also confirmed they would need to assess the fitness of other squad members following the 2-0 defeat by Chelsea on Thursday evening.
“It’s a bit early to tell,” Postecoglou said on Friday. “There are a few of the guys who are feeling the effects of the game.
“We’ll probably get a better update later in the afternoon. I don’t think there is anything significant out of it, but we’ll find out a bit later.”
