Curtis Jones scored a quickfire double in the first half at King Power Stadium, with Trent Alexander-Arnold then increasing the Reds' lead in the 71st minute with a stunning free-kick.

The result moved Jürgen Klopp's side to within one point of Newcastle United and Manchester United, who sit third and fourth respectively and have both played a game fewer.

Team news

There were two changes to the Liverpool side that defeated Brentford 1-0, with Luis Diaz and Jordan Henderson replacing Diogo Jota and the injured Darwin Nunez.

Liverpool: Alisson, Alexander-Arnold, Konate, Van Dijk, Robertson, Fabinho, Henderson (Milner, 74), Jones (Carvalho, 84), Diaz (Jota, 74), Salah (Elliott, 88), Gakpo.

First half

A frenzied start by both teams actually resulted in very few clear-cut opportunities.

That said, Alisson Becker was out quickly to smother Jamie Vardy's finish from a tight angle, while Wout Faes got a toe in to clear the danger just as Cody Gakpo was about to strike at goal following a brilliant ball by Alexander-Arnold.

The Reds were then enjoying greater spells of possession, and around the half-hour mark Diaz found the side-netting with a dragged shot, before Fabinho fired over from distance.

Those half-chances proved to be encouraging signs as the pair of first-half goals quickly followed.

The opener arrived with the help of Alisson's long kick upfield that put his side on the attack. The ball was eventually shifted towards Mohamed Salah on the right side, the Egyptian cutting inside and curling a cross towards the back post with perfect pace and precision.

And there arriving right on time was Jones, who poked home with a controlled first-time finish.

Salah was the creator again for Jones' second when he found the No.17 free inside the box with a quick pass, and the opening goalscorer controlled and spun to put a powerful effort beyond Daniel Iversen in the Leicester goal.

Liverpool nearly took a three-goal lead into the break but Gakpo had an effort saved by Iversen just moments after play resumed following the second goal.

Second half

Leicester needed Ricardo Pereira on the cover when Alexander-Arnold's ball forward caused confusion between Faes and Iversen, with Gakpo waiting to pounce.

At the other end, Alisson quickly got across to brilliantly tip a curler from Harvey Barnes on the edge of the box behind for a corner.

The visitors continued to carry an attacking threat, however, and Salah was denied by Iversen just prior to the third goal arriving.

Henderson's bringing down resulted in a free-kick being awarded to the left of Leicester's box. Salah gently nudged the ball, opening the angle for Alexander-Arnold to whip his effort into the top corner and leave Iversen with no chance.

With a hat-trick of assists to his name, Salah looked to get on the scoresheet himself but was off target when through on goal in minute 79.

Regardless, the Reds' winning run was maintained and a third consecutive clean sheet also secured.
