The visitors took the lead through Rodrigo Moreno in the fourth minute, but Mohamed Salah levelled for the Reds a short while later.
Crysencio Summerville, however, struck late on to earn the spoils for the Whites in L4.
Team news
Jürgen Klopp made one change from the midweek win over AFC Ajax in the Champions League.
Thiago Alcantara returned to the starting line-up for the clash, replacing captain Jordan Henderson in midfield.
Liverpool: Alisson, Alexander-Arnold (Milner, 79), Gomez, Van Dijk, Robertson, Fabinho (Henderson, 60), Thiago, Elliott (Jones, 60), Salah, Firmino, Nunez.
Unused subs: Kelleher, Konate, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Tsimikas, Carvalho, Phillips.
First half
The Reds threatened inside the first minute, Salah capitalising on a defensive error to hook the ball goalward from a tight angle.
Leeds defender Pascal Struijk, though, retreated in time to head the ball clear from underneath the crossbar.
That intervention proved vital for the visitors, who took the lead just three minutes later.
Goalkeeper Alisson Becker lost his footing at the crucial moment, which left Joe Gomez’s backpass to be claimed by Rodrigo, who tapped into an empty net unchallenged.
Liverpool dominated possession in response and were level inside 15 minutes, with Salah finding the back of the net this time from an Andy Robertson cross.
The game was being played at a furious pace thanks to swift attacks from both teams.
Leeds threatened next as Rasmus Kristensen’s ball from the right found Brenden Aaronson in the area, the midfielder striking the crossbar thanks to a guided volley.
Klopp’s charges responded through Darwin Nunez, with the No.27 bursting through on goal only to be thwarted by Illan Meslier’s tackle.
Salah also had a shot saved while Robertson watched a deflected cross fall inches the wrong side of the post, leaving the game all square at the break.
Second half
Liverpool signalled early intent after the interval as Nunez fired a low ball across the face of goal.
Salah also shot wide before the Reds made a double substitution on the hour mark with the introduction of Curtis Jones and Henderson.
The former made his presence felt immediately as the No.17 helped set off an attack that resulted in Robertson seeing a driven effort beaten away from goal by Meslier.
The Whites goalkeeper was called into action again, with Liverpool breaking at pace.
Salah pinched the ball from the retreating Liam Cooper and slid in Nunez, though his low shot was again halted by the visiting No.1.
Henderson was next to go close as his hook back across goal from a corner was palmed behind, with Salah also seeing a shot head over.
Nunez let fly from distance after a spell of possession, forcing Meslier into more acrobatics to keep the scores level.
Roberto Firmino’s low volley was also held by the visiting ’keeper, though the Brazilian didn’t quite catch the ball cleanly.
Salah was again thwarted as Firmino had a header inside the six-yard box saved.
And in the 89th minute, the visitors broke free and Summerville found the back of the net with a low finish from inside the box to earn victory.
