ReviewLiverpool 3-0 Aston Villa: Analysis of Mac Allister's 'class' and composed Gomez

During his regular post-match Review Show, which is now available to watch on LFCTV GO, the former Red analysed an impressive outing from Jürgen Klopp’s men at Anfield.

“I thought it was a really good atmosphere and the players responded to that as to what was a really comfortable victory,” said Mellor.

“Mac Allister is class, he really is. The thing is, you have to say he has settled in really quickly and he understands what is required.

“He can win the ball as a No.6, his passing is so controlled and composed. Winning the ball back is something he does really well but when he does that he can also pick out a pass.

“He sees the picture, he knows what is around him and he covers a lot of ground.”

Mellor was also keen to highlight the performance of Joe Gomez, who helped Liverpool claim their first clean sheet of the season with a composed display at the back.

“Joe is an experienced player who has been at the club for a long time now,” he said. “What stood out for me about Joe’s performance was the amount of possession he won back for us and I really thought he was at it. He also did well when he went to right-back when Trent had to go off.

“He came off the bench against Newcastle and did really well, and he handled the threat of Ollie Watkins and Moussa Diaby really well alongside Joel Matip.”
