ClubLFC players visit local schools on World Book Day
It was a busy World Book Day for Liverpool FC with players visiting local schools on Merseyside to meet the children and encourage their reading.
LFC Women defender Megan Campbell was a guest at St Gabriel’s Church of England primary school in Huyton, where she read with the pupils and answered their questions.
Campbell was thrilled to spend time with the children, saying: “I loved visiting with the children and staff at St Gabriel’s and reading with them. I hope they enjoyed their World Book Day as much as I did.”
Meanwhile, four Academy players paid a visit to Kensington Primary School in Liverpool.
The Academy has been partners with the school for some time but visits had to be put on hold during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Melkamu Frauendorf, Stefan Bajcetic, Mateusz Musialowski and Fabian Mrozek joined Academy player care manager Phil Roscoe in spending time with different groups of children, listening to them as they read and then reading with them.
As well as encouraging the children in their reading, World Book Day helps the players to practise their own language skills and improve their communication with some children for whom English is also a second language.
A school spokesperson said: “Kensington Primary School are really excited to rekindle their reading partnership with the LFC Academy after an enforced break due to COVID restrictions.
“The visit today is especially important as it is World Book Day and the children were very excited to share their reading skills with the boys.
“Getting children into reading is so important as it is a skill for life and a priority for the school, especially after the time the children have missed due to the pandemic.
“The boys who came to read help to inspire the children as they can see that reading is a key skill for everyone, including their footballing heroes.
“Today we were able to match up children who have the same home language as the Academy boys.
“It was lovely for them to connect with young people who will have exactly the same experience with reading in a second language as they do.
“The children have had a wonderful time and were thrilled to share their books and chat together.”
