LFC marks 39th anniversary of Heysel Stadium disaster
The disaster occurred before the European Cup final between Liverpool and Juventus on May 29, 1985, when events in Block Z of the stadium tragically led to the deaths of 39 people and left hundreds more injured.
As a mark of respect to those who died, floral tributes were placed beside the Heysel memorial plaque on the Sir Kenny Dalglish Stand at Anfield. Flags across all club sites are being flown at half-mast throughout the day.
Billy Hogan, CEO at Liverpool FC, said: “We come together on this day as a club to pay our respects to the 39 people who lost their lives at Heysel and remember all those affected by this tragedy.
“Our thoughts are with the families, and everyone affected on this poignant day that will forever be an important part of the club’s history.”
