LFC Foundation's Matt Parish pays tribute to Sven-Goran Eriksson

Eriksson, who managed a host of clubs and countries throughout a storied career – including a spell in charge of the England national team between 2001 and 2006 – died surrounded by his family following a long illness. He was 76.

Eriksson grew up a Liverpool supporter in his homeland of Sweden and fulfilled a lifelong ambition earlier this year when he led a Reds side at Anfield in the annual LFC Foundation charity match.

He was in the dugout to lead Liverpool FC Legends against their AFC Ajax counterparts in front of nearly 60,000 fans, with the game going on to raise close to £1.2 million to support LFC Foundation's work in the Liverpool City Region and beyond.

"It was an incredible day and something I will never forget, and to know that the occasion helped to raise so much for the LFC Foundation makes it even more special for me," Eriksson said at the time.

Paying tribute, Parish said: "I'm so very sad to hear the news of Sven's passing today. Everyone at LFC Foundation would like to send our love and thoughts to Sven's family and friends at this difficult time.

"We were privileged that Sven was able to take part in the legends game in March against Ajax and so glad that it fulfilled an ambition for him to be on the touchline at Anfield."
