ClubLFC and The Red Way win prestigious award for ongoing commitment to sustainability
Held in London at Sustainability LIVE, the Global Sustainability & ESG Awards celebrate those who place sustainability at the core of their operations and decision-making, championing a more responsible approach to business.
The awards also recognised LFC’s director of impact, Rishi Jain, with a highly commended award in its Future Leader category for his dedication to embedding and promoting sustainable practices at the club and inspiring positive change in the pursuit of a more sustainable future.
The judging panel praised the club’s commitment and comprehensive approach to addressing key sustainability challenges, for the ESG Programme Award, from achieving a 29 per cent reduction in carbon emissions during the 2022-23 season to LFC Foundation supporting 123,000 people. A rise in fan awareness and positive behaviour change has also resulted in plastic bottle waste recycling on matchdays increasing from 25 per cent to 90 per cent.
Jain said: “It’s an honour for our work to be recognised by Sustainability LIVE and it really is testament to the outstanding commitment of everyone at Liverpool FC who are working to make a positive impact on our planet, people and communities.
“The Red Way is deeply integrated into every aspect of the club’s operations, and we are immensely proud to receive this award. We will continue to strive to maintain our reputation as the leading sustainability programme in world football.”
The Red Way enables LFC fans, staff, partners and suppliers to work together in a way that continues to harvest a meaningful impact. Through focusing on the three pillars of people, planet and communities, The Red Way strives to support 14 of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.
The club will visit the United Nations in New York this month as part of New York Climate Week to highlight its sustainability work and support of the UN’s SDGs during Global Goals Week.
This award adds to an impressive roster of accolades for The Red Way, having been named as the most environmentally sustainable Premier League club for the second consecutive year in the Sport Positive League and as one of the top 10 most sustainable sports companies by Front Office Sports, along with a Sport Industry Award for environmental sustainability.
