NewsLFC Academy marks Holocaust Memorial Day

With this month marking the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, the visit explored their faith, highlighted prejudice and helped them learn about the Holocaust.

The U18s squad listened to a presentation on Jewish identity and explored the synagogue to understand how the Jewish community faith worship.

They then learned about the individual stories of Holocaust survivors during a tour of the Jewish Museum.

Each player on the visit made an individual pledge to an action to commemorate the Holocaust.

The visit then ended with a tribute in memory of the Holocaust and to survivors.

Prince Cisse, one of the players on the visit, said: "It was good for us to experience and understand different religions and how we can help to remember and respect the Holocaust."

The visit was organised by the education department at the Academy led by Caitlin Hawkins, head of education.

She said: "It's part of our life skills and personal development curriculum within the U18 education programme as we see it as vital to enhance the players' cultural understanding."

Many Academy scholars during the last decade have been to visit Auschwitz to learn first-hand about the horrors that took place there.

This year the Liverpool U15s squad will travel to play in the Auschwitz tournament in April, visiting the site and presenting our learnings to other teams taking part in the event.
